GLASGOW GLENMORE CLUB NEWSLETTER SUMMER 2004
Editorial
Greetings from your new committee, and its secretary in particular ! Getting to grips with the job will take a little time, not least the quirks of the internet, so please be patient, folks, if things don’t quite go as smoothly as we all wish. That said, your contributions are , as ever, most welcome because it’s your news which is so important in helping the newsletter keep members informed of what’s going on. And of course that is especially important for Glenmorons who live far away from Glasgow and can’t easily attend meets.
Having got over the formal bit, do have a great summer wherever you get to ! Perhaps even this slightly later than usual issue of the summer newsletter will actually mark the start of some decent weather – both here in Scotland and for the next couple of weeks in the Stubai Alp for the club’s anniversary continental meet.
Henry.

Footpath repair and maintenance
Following the strong support shown at the recent AGM that the club should contribute to this work, the committee agreed that an immediate donation of £250 should be made to The National Trust for Scotland. It is aiming to invest £400,000 annually on this essential task , and on hearing about our donation expressed great pleasure because it appears that ours is the first such ‘club donation.’ The committee will review this matter again early in 2005 with a view to making a further donation. There will be the opportunity for members to hear about the footpath work of the NTS at the indoor meet on 11th. November – details to follow in next newsletter.
Bon Accord Pub Nights

To date, some 22 club members have intimated interest in attending this meet. It is now time to firm up on numbers – there are 28 places available, so there is space for more folk to attend the meet. A note will be sent to ‘the 22’ asking them to confirm their interest ( or not), request payment of £12 per night plus £3 for bedding if not taking sleeping bag, and also to clarify their plans for travel, eg some are planning to include the meet as part of a longer stay on the island(s). This is important for organising minibus transport on the island.
So, if you thought you’d already given your name and want to go – but you don’t get an e-mail or note within the next couple of weeks, or you have just decided that you’d like to go, then contact Henry.
The ferry times are : proposed travel out on 17.30 from Ullapool, arriving Stornaway 20.15 ( the earlier ferry of the day departs at 10.30, arriving Stornaway 13.15) . Return Monday on 13.45 from Stornaway, arriving Ullapool at 16.30. Return fare is £24.05 pp.

- Spittal Of Glenshee Hotel Car Park (Lower car park) 9.30am OS 43 GR 111699This will be the first day meet of the new season and should get us of to a good start. It’s a popular location, and only 2hrs from Glasgow. The hotel will let us use their car park but would prefer us to use the lower one, especially if you are leaving vehicles all day.
Saturday 30th. October - Loch Lomond Youth Hostel
This is the centre piece of our 50th Anniversary celebrations. The format is a dinner dance in this elegant setting. The evening will commence with drinks at 6.30pm and a three course meal at 7pm.Afterwards there will be a few short speeches and then we will dance to our favourite ceilidh band "The Reel Thing". Medals should be worn.
The caterers, who have extensive experience of the location, will also provide a bar until 1am. Wine will also be available from the caterers. Their prices are reasonable; however, should you wish to bring your own favourite vintage they will charge £4 per bottle corkage.
The cost has been calculated at £40.00 per person. This includes the cost of overnight accommodation but not breakfast on Sunday morning. It is not possible to offer a price without accommodation.
It is important for the catering arrangements to have accurate figures well in advance. So I need your completed booking slip and cheque by the 1st October 2004. I also need notice of any special dietary needs such as vegetarian or allergies etc.
I do not intend to allocate the beds, so that will be first come first served.
This is the club’s October weekend meet. However ,the Friday night is self booking via the SYHA( 0871 330 8539)

50th. Anniversary Book
The anniversary book – ‘ How You’ve Changed – 50 Years of the Glasgow Glenmore Club’ – is now in its final stages of preparation, and the price will be £10. As noted in the last newsletter, please tell Caroline Thompson if you intend to buy a copy/copies – Tel.0141-931 5368 or carolinemt2001@yahoo.co.uk.
Also, please remember to mention the book to any former members that you know of – or indeed anyone else who may be interested. More news to follow when the book is available for purchase.
And another reminder about our anniversary activities is to put a date in your diary for the day meet to the Campsies, on Sunday November 14th., exactly 50 years to the day since the club’s very first outdoor meet. This may be of interest to former members, so please do spread the word !
We are all of course aware of the club’s links with Glenmore Lodge, and for those wanting to know more about its story then visit www.smc.org.uk where a History of Glenmore Lodge is now presented – thanks to Andrew McGinn for passing on this information.
Membership News
Club membership list : please tell Arthur Whittaker about any changes to your contact details, ie home and mobile telephone number, e-mail and home address. It’s vital that we keep records up to date …. Thank you for your co-operation. Arthur can be contacted on 0141 956 5976, or at Arthur@mech.gla.ac.uk
For those members not on the internet, a copy is attached of the recently updated address list.
Congratulations to our 4 new Munro compleatists since the last issue of the newsletter
Alastair Morrison, on Ben Vane, 18th. April. Alastair chose this date ‘ to be certain of enjoying the warmth of a Spring day .’ The top 300m of this Arrochar Alp hill was covered in snow, which gently fell on the summit and ensured that the champagne was suitably chilled for the occasion. Alastair’s round took 54 years – so that’s a record set to stand for a long time !
Fiona Anderson , on Luinne Bheinn, 29th. May during the Knoydart weekend.
Ruth Keighley, on Bidein a Ghlas Thiuill ( An Teallach) , 2nd. June, with Brian McDaid and they celebrated with champagne and scallops …. If that was on the top then standards are rising….. take note, future compleatists !
Carol Proudfoot, on Sgorr nam Fiannaidh ( Aonach Eagach), 19th. June and, yes, in snowy conditions.
Bill Sutherland
It is with great regret that we heard about the recent death of former member Bill Sutherland from Dominik Hay of Leys , also a former member, then Dominik Jascoll. Bill was a member in the late 70’s and early 80’s and was renowned for his epic outings , completing several Bob Graham rounds in the Lake District as well as being an accomplished distance runner. He died whilst on holiday with friends on a walking holiday in the Picos de Europa in northern Spain. The Club has sent its condolences to his family via Dominik who was a close friend of Bill, along with Robin Paterson and Sandy Donald, also former members of the club.

Mountain Bothies Association - Spring 2004 Newsletter
This edition of the MBA Newsletter included a full account of the last AGM in October, at St Boswells, where the Director of Projects reported that 954 man-days and £27,000 had been spent over the previous year. This seems set to continue, with financial approval having been given for rebuilding or reroofing work in six bothies.
One of these is at Loch Chiarain bothy (south end) between 2nd and 17th July, so any members not going to Austria (or already away) could find this an interesting project, with helicopter, boat (over Blackwater), 4WD, ATV and perhaps even ponies being used. If interested contact Jim Ross at 01631 720 599 before 2 July - or just turn up! (There's a Corbett and a Graham both within 2 miles of the bothy!)
www.cairngormbothynetwork.co.uk
is the web-site for anyone interested in Cairngorm bothies, not only MBA maintained. Sadly, one of these exists no more, Bob Scott's, near Derry lodge, which was burned down due to leaving a blazing fire unattended. Bothiers beware!
An editorial comment in the last MBA Newsletter about the 'expanding the bothy network' provoked a long article and many letters in the Newsletter, fairly evenly divided for and against.
All the above, the customary news about bothies in all areas - and much more - is in this Newsletter.
Finally, the next MBA AGM is on 16 October at Laggan Village Hall.
Scottish Rights of Way and Access Society (ScotWays) - Spring 2004 Newsletter
From several articles in this Newsletter, it is obvious that there is a continuing need for the Society, even with the new Land Reform Act, together with the related Access Code, becoming law probably towards the end of 2004.
One of the Society's major projects is the production of a Catalogue of Rights of Way (CROW) throughout Scotland, a huge task with nearly 8000 routes, of which 84% have already been surveyed by ScotWays volunteers - and the volunteers' work continues with the routes still outstanding, not to mention signposting and other miscellaneous work.
Amongst other news included in this issue was notice of various organised ScotWays walks and the issue of a new ScotWays leaflet entitled 'Walks in the Lammermuirs', available from ScotWays. ( - no Munros or Corbetts, though!)
