GLASGOW GLENMORE CLUB NEWSLETTER AUTUMN 2006
Editorial
Now that practically all the runners and riders are sorted out for the new season, the committee will be starting to think about the 2007-2008 season, so if you have suggestions then please speak up! Having to plan so far ahead is a sign of the times with so many people wanting quality venues for their weekends away.
And, yes, my familiar request once again for any interesting news you may have. So far, no compleations have been recorded in the newsletters this year. Can this be true ? Are there one or more Glenmorons out there who have secretly completed a round of Munros, Corbetts or even Grahams – if so, then please own up and star in the next issue, due out just before Christmas.
Henry
Chairman’s Chunter
So here we are again; happy as can be…
Another year lies before us and once more the committee has strived to put together an interesting programme of meets to keep you entertained. Some will be familiar to us and others are novel. New Year sees us at Morag’s Hostel in Fort Augustus and in March we are off to Strontian to a brand new hostel. Lots of us need those awkward Corbetts so I expect demand will be high.
The indoor programme sees the return of the quiz and the ceilidh, other highlights should be renewable energy and the MCofS justifying their subscriptions face to face.
Hopefully the new venue with a bar will be a success and I look forward to seeing you all soon.

Footpaths Annual Donation
The committee investigated a number of organisations to whom we could make the £500 donation agreed at this year’s AGM. We only found two where we could be certain that our donation would be specifically directed to footpath work – the John Muir Trust and NTS. It was decided that the JMT should be the recipient. If you know of others then please give details to any member of the committee so that we can table a full list at next year’s AGM.
Programme for 2006-2007
The full year’s programme of outdoor and indoor meets is at the back of this newsletter.
For the weekend outdoor meets, here is a reminder of the booking arrangements introduced earlier in the year with item (4) being agreed as well at the AGM:
1. Members wanting to attend a meet should in the first instance telephone or e-mail the coordinator for the month of that meet, in order to ascertain that a place ( or places) is available, and to confirm that a place(s) is requested. Alternatively, a member can add his/her name to the meet list at an indoor meeting.
2. A cheque for the appropriate amount should then be sent to the coordinator as soon as practicable thereafter, so that the coordinator receives it within a week of the action per (1) above.
3. If a member sends a cheque without first taking action per (1) above, then that member cannot be allocated a place until the cheques have been received from members who had intimated their wish to attend that meet per (1) above during the week before the date that cheque was received (i.e. from the member who had not taken action per (1) above)
4. Booking to open about a week after issue of newsletter. Also, note that 2 places are reserved for potential/new members and if not taken then to be released to other members two weeks before the meet.
For the weekend meets in this newsletter, bookings will be taken on or after 31st August with the exception of the Inverey meet on September 22nd – 25th as noted below in meet details.
All indoor meets are on Thursday evenings, starting at 7.30 pm, except the Ceilidh which is on Friday 8th December. PLEASE REMEMBER INDOOR MEETS ARE AT OUR NEW VENUE OF THE CLUBHOUSE OF HYNDLAND BOWLING CLUB. Its location is shown below. Suggestions about transport and parking were given in the last (Summer) newsletter and included : Hyndland Road, Clarence Drive and possibly Prince Albert Road (at Clarence Drive lights).
Hyndland Bowling Club
September Coordinator Ingrid Parker
Sunday 10th September Ben Cruachan OS50 GR 126 277
Indian Summer weather, of course. There is the round of Ben Cruachan, comprising Ben Cruachan, Beinn Chochuill, Beinn Eunaich (Munros) and Beinn a' Bhuiridh (Corbett).
Meet initially at 9.30 am at the carpark next to the Salmon Leap pub. From there it is possible to park in one of the laybys nearer the start of Ben Cruachan or beside the Old Military Road, west of St Conan's Kirk. Parking at the visitor's centre is not recommended; two hour limit and gates close at 4.45pm.
Thursday 21st September Members’ Slides
Luxury has struck the club - we are meeting in our new venue, see location plan above.
The date is NOT a cock-up, it is the pattern, it's just that September starts on a Friday and the September weekend is quite early on. I hope this will not deter anyone and those of you who were not at the whisky tasting, which was the catalyst for the change of venue, will be consumed with curiosity!
This is a members "Slide" night so please bring your pics of this summer and any of the past year. We can accommodate electronic as well as mechanical images. A third option is to send your jpegs to Ingrid, with or without commentary who will enlist help to do them justice.
Traditionally, this is a very good evening, please make it so again.
Parking is tight, try Hyndland Road, Clarence Drive and possibly Prince Albert Road (at Clarence Drive lights). Or phone Ingrid.
If anyone is thinking about having a meal beforehand, then please contact Ingrid.
Friday 22nd – Monday 25th September: Muir of Inverey Cottage( Cairngorm Club Hut) OS43 GR 076 896 and Inverey Youth Hostel GR 076 898
We have two sets of accommodation for this popular venue. Muir Cottage was recently renovated to a high standard – see article by Club member Ian Bryce in latest issue of Scottish Mountaineer - and can accommodate 18. The Youth Hostel – also exclusively ours for the weekend - provides more basic accommodation for a further 14, making a total 32 places available overall.
Muir Cottage is equipped with mattresses, pillows and ample blankets , but these must be used with your own sleeping bags or sheet and pillow case. For those staying at the Youth Hostel bed linen is provided. There is a plethera of hills in the area, some of which have quite a long walk-in, so that they beckon before the nights draw in. Apart from the obvious big ones via Derrry Lodge, there are Beinnn Bhrotain and Carn Cloich-mhulinn on one side of White Bridge, various Corbetts on the other as well as Carn Bhac and Carn Tuic and neighbours back in the direction of Glen Shee. Approach to Hut and hostel: Muir Cottage is situated on the north side of the Linn of Dee road, some 8 km west of Braemar, ca 200 metres beyond the Inverey Youth Hostel and shortly before the road comes to the river.
Cost is £33 for the 3 nights: please send cheque made out to Glasgow Glenmore Club to Ingrid. Please note: bookings will be taken wef Friday 25th August which is less than the week’s ‘gap’ after the issue of the newsletter, agreed at the AGM, because this meet is only about a month away.
October Coordinator Mary Cox
Thursday 5th October MCofS
The Club is an affiliated member of MCofS. One of their senior officials will be telling us about what MCofS does for its members and current issues, not least the proposed constitutional changes. So if you have lingering questions in your mind about just what the insurance cover is all about, or the work done by MCofS’s various committees then this is your chance, unless of course you read The Scottish Mountaineer from cover to cover or regularly visit www.mountaineering-scotland.org.uk.
Pre-meet meal at 6pm: please contact Mary for venue details if you want to join the diners.
Sunday 15th October : Pitlochry OS 52 GR938581
Meet at the railway station car park at 9.30am. Quite a long drive (an hour and a half from Glasgow) for a day meet so you’ll maybe not want to venture far from our rendezvous but there are alternatives to Ben Vrackie honestly. Munros at Glen Tilt, Munros or Corbetts at Drumochter or Loch Tummel or, if conditions are less favourable some might even try the local Graham, Blath Bhalg. Please let me know by Monday 9th if you are going.
Thursday 19th October: Douglas Philp - First Aid
The Scout motto is ‘be prepared,’ and after this talk we hope that we’ll all be a little better prepared in the event of having to administer some first aid on the hill. As a member of the Arrochar Mountain Rescue Team Douglas had lots of first hand experience of first aid – so there’ll be tips on what to take and what to do, which should be useful as our programme of outdoor meets gets under way for the new season.
Pre-meet meal at 6 pm: please contact Mary for venue details if you want to join the diners.
Friday 27th – Sunday 29th October : Ski Lodge, Bridge of Orchy OS 50 GR 292389
Despite hail, rain and snow Glenmorans achieved many summits on our last weekend visit here in October 2002. Let’s hope for better weather in 2006. If you have not visited before turn left immediately after the Bridge of Orchy Hotel and left again after crossing the bridge, through a gate and along the private road by the river. Accommodation is in small dorms, bring you own sleeping bag. Costs: Adults £8.00 per night, schoolchildren £5.00 per night. Please make your cheque payable to Glasgow Glenmore Club and send to Mary. Bookings taken on/after 31st. August.
November Coordinator Alice Harrison
Thursday 9th November Country Dancing
Harrold and Bill will lead us in the intricacies of Reels, Jigs, Strathspeys and Twirls; getting our feet tapping to the beat of many a tune. Come along to refresh your skills before the Ceilidh and the New Year meet.
Sunday 12th November Glen Falloch OS 56 Grid Ref NN318185
An ideal venue for the short days of winter, Glen Falloch at the head of Loch Lomond, offers a variety of walking. There are several Munros nearby or you can walk along the West Highland Way.
Meet at 9.30 am at the Stagger Inn opposite the Drovers Arms at Inverarnan.
Thursday 23rd November : Ross Firth - Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park - Development Opportunity or Unique Landscape to be preserved at all costs.
Ross Firth, Head of Park Ranger Service, will describe what is so special about our local National Park and how the Park Authority resolves the continuing conflict of development versus preservation. Ross will give an insight into how the National Park both serves the needs of all who enjoy the great outdoors and of the natural habitat.
Pre-meet meal at 6 pm: please contact Alice for venue details if you want to join the diners.
Friday 24th – Sunday 26th November Grasmere Butharlyp Howe Youth Hostel, OS 90 GR 337079. Address is Easdale road, Grasmere, LA22 9QG.
The Club has booked 30 places in this most scenic Lake District Youth Hostel in the middle of Grasmere. This is a 4 star YH. Saturday evening Dinner and 2 breakfasts are included in the cost of the weekend making it a stress free stay with no washing up! A map is attached with the hostel clearly marked in the centre of the village (not to be confused with the other Youth Hostel near the village). The total cost for the weekend with 2 nights, Saturday dinner and 2 breakfasts is £46-80p per person. Please send cheques made out to Glasgow Glenmore Club to Alice Harrison to book a place. Bookings taken on/after 31st. August.

December Coordinator Gordon Dykes
Friday December 8th Ceilidh - Hyndland Bowling Club
The ceilidh returns this year with renewed enthusiasm – aided by a country drancing meet a week or two earlier so that we launch it into action with practised steps. One, two, three…"step we gaily on we go…"
December 10th Ben Lomond Grid Ref NS 358 986
Meet 9.30 am in the car park at Rowardennan. Ben Lomond. Not much more to be said about it.
December 30th – January 1st Fort Augustus Morag’s Lodge.
We have an exclusive booking for three days in this modern and well appointed hostel. The web site www.moragslodge.com can guide you through the facilities. There is plenty of accommodation as it can sleep up to 80; in rooms that include doubles and twins. So please feel free to bring family and friends along.
The cost is £59 each person for the three nights. Please make out your cheque to Glasgow Glenmore Club and send to Gordon at above address. This costs a little more than last year but reflects better facilities and the greater space we will have. So I hope to see you there! Bookings taken on/after 31st August.
A Message and Invitation to participate in Tim Mason’s Compleation
I have finally decided to put an end to the suspense and own up to the truth
to your enquiries 'So when exactly are you going to finish your Munros?'
The quest which started (unbeknown to me at the time)on Sgurr nan Gillian in
1971 will be completed on Lochnagar on Saturday 7th October and all Glenmorons are
welcome.
I have booked Kate's Bunkhouse at Braemar - but this is now full - what with
family 'n all. But if you want to slum it at the Fife Arms or do it the old- fashioned way at
the campsite etc. we would be delighted to include you in the trip and transport to Loch Muick.
There will be an evening meal at Braemar Lodge hotel (Burns supper style with
veg option) three courses for £15/head - the speeches come free though! As I
wanted a room to ourselves (actually the management insisted once they heard
who it was!)the numbers for the meal are restricted too, but there are a few
spots available - first to let me know gets em!!
If you’re on a diet and just want to do the hill this would be great too.
Just let me know so that Harrold gets you on the route card.
Message to all Glenmorons from John McPartlin
WANTED - New Manager for the Club Website
Would anyone like to have a go at managing this?
If so I am quite happy to hand it over and would give all assistance with the technical aspects/familiarisation. It’s really quite easy and it is good fun.
The Website has been up and running now for 5 years - I very much enjoyed the challenge of setting it up in the first place and still enjoy the mechanics of running it but feel the time has come for someone else to take over and give it a rethink and a bit of a fresh look.
Please get in touch with me if at all interested.

Mountaineering Council of Scotland – McofS
The recent issue of The Scottish Mountaineer has an item on progress with the proposed incorporation of the organization, from which it is reassuring to learn that a working party has been set up, including representatives from several leading clubs, with the aim of producing a constitution which should get broad approval at a special EGM. We should get the latest news on progress at our indoor meet on 5th October when we have a speaker from MCofS.
Mountain Bothies Association (MBA) News
Summer Newsletter
This issue of the MBA Newsletter includes the usual news of bothy conditions and renovations, as well as notice of the next MBA AGM, which will take place on Saturday 14th October at Crianlarich Village Hall ( the same weekend as the Club day meet at Pitlochry !)
Other articles and information included:
the use being made of the MBA website and forum for a variety of purposes. www.mountainbothies.org.uk
a request for more volunteers for work parties – last year’s budget was underspent because of this. Up to date information about work parties is always on the website
Craig YH ( near Diabeg) is now officially an MBA bothy and a very interesting article included a description of all the work required in renovating and converting it for use as an open bothy.
An amusing and interesting article entitled ‘ Down-Under Dunnies’ gave descriptions of some unusual designs for toilets connected with mountain huts in New Zealand.
An article entitled ‘Kintail Earthquake’ ( date-line 2002) will recall to some Club members the last Club meet in Jura in May, 1998.
‘Islay Stravaig’ gave an interesting insight to the possibilities of kayaking towards mountains and bothies, without ‘humphing’ huge rucksacks.
The MBA Newsletter contained in addition to the above, many other articles and as always is available on loan from the Club Librarian, Connie Thomson
Latest Issue of Club Library List
Our librarian, Connie Thomson, has updated the Club library list and a copy is issued with this newsletter.
