GLASGOW GLENMORE CLUB NEWSLETTER AUTUMN 2004

Editorial

This issue of the newsletter provides a full listing of all the Club’s planned meets for the coming year, so mark up your diary ….and, yes, you’re probably muttering ‘ why are the indoor meets on the 2nd and 4th. and not the 1st. and 3rd. Thursdays of each month? Well, it somehow happened, and so yours truly should receive a metaphorical slap on wrist – all the more so, having just discovered that at the Club’s very first committee meeting in 1954 it was decreed that indoor meets should be on the 1st. and 3rd. Thursday of each month. Perhaps if I was playing Monopoly for Mountaineers, rather than being sent to jail and don’t collect £200 if you pass Go, it would be ‘go to Norfolk, forfeit 5 ticks’ … but enough of that .... and onto correcting an omission in the last newsletter when Hugh Bourhill’s name didn’t appear on the list of names for the new committee. With apologies to Hugh, here is the full list:

See the last sheet which lists all outdoor and indoor meets.

This time of the year is the start of the stalking season, so if you’re heading for the hills you can check on access contacts via www.walkingwild.com or use the Hill Phones booklet produced by MC of S which members receive annually with their Scottish Mountaineer magazine.

Thursday 16th. September: Members’ Slides of the 2004 Austria Neustift Meet

This is the first indoor meet of the new season, so what better topic than to see and hear about the recent exploits of the Club in the Stubai Alp. For members with pictures to show, please contact John McPartlin about the (digital) arrangements for the evening.

Friday 24th. - Monday 27th. September: Scaladale Centre, Ardvourlie, Harris

Thursday 30th. September: Dr. Tom Gilhooly – Sports Nutrition

Dr Tom Gilhooly is a well know figure in the Glasgow medical fraternity and Gordon has seen him deliver several talks of great interest over the years. Tonight he will be discussing his involvement with a nutrition programme for Olympic standard athletes.

The meal is booked for the Parthenon on Great Western Road at 6.15pm

October Co-ordinator Gordon Dykes 0141-959-2217

Sun 10th Oct - Spittal of Glenshee Hotel Car Park (Lower car park) 9.30am OS 43 GR 111699

This will be the first day meet of the new season and should get us off to a good start. It’s a popular location, and only 2hrs from Glasgow. The hotel will let us use their car park but would prefer us to use the lower one, especially if you are leaving vehicles all day.

Thursday 14th. October: Thaw Clothing

This is an exhibition of mountain clothing by Thaw, a company formed by Tracy Harrison, a climber, and Alison Wight, a mountain runner. They became frustrated with the poor range of clothing available to women, especially clothing that looked good as well as being functional, and so decided to manufacture their own.

Despite this being women’s clothing it is an evening for all … an education on the quality and style of material being used in the 21st. century, sorry no tweed. This is a chance for the ladies to indulge themselves and an opportunity for the men to start their Christmas shopping early, so bring along your chequebooks! And of course, who knows if suitable swim and underwear may also be modelled, so come along and find out.

Thursday 28th October: Old Slides Night (more than 25 years old)

Not one but two member's slides nights in the same season. Life doesn’t get any better unless you’re a three headed dog (explanation on application only). It’s another evening of topical nostalgia. So dust off those old slides; clean off those spots and view them one last time before burning them to CD.

Inclusion is not limited to club events but to the outdoors’ last century. So feel free to interpret this as liberally as a defence lawyer with no scruples.

Gordon would be grateful for some indication of your intention to display your sepia gems. Please phone or email gordondykes@speed-mail.co.uk with an estimate of how many you have.

Friday 29th. SATURDAY 30th. and Sunday 31st. October: 50th. Anniversary Dinner Dance at Loch Lomond Youth Hostel OS56 368835

For those wanting to stay on the Friday night, please self-book direct with hostel at 0870 004 136 (a correction of number given in last newsletter) or with SYHA HQ at 0870 155 3255.

The bookings for the event are steadily coming in, but we still have a long way to go to secure enough to meet the cost of the exclusive booking of the hostel for the Saturday night. So if you are still thinking about the meet, then ponder no more and send off your form and cheque to Gordon …… and remember folks, the next event of this significance in the Club calendar will be in 2054, so there’s no need to wait that long.

November Co-ordinator Kate Stewart 0141 959 2627

Thursday 11th November: Footpaths Dougie Baird NTS

In the last 15 years the National Trust for Scotland has spent in the region of £2 million on paths repairs. Their present project, Sole Trading, aims at developing their work and plans to spend a further £2 million over the next five years. Dougie will explain how the money is spent and attempt to persuade us of the value of this work. Obviously he will be preaching to the converted as this is the project to which the club has recently donated £250. If you want to know where your money has gone and if it’s well spent then come and hear all about it.

Sunday 14th November: The Campsies OS 64 GR563796

Another 50th celebration? This time it’s the genuine article. On the 14th.November 1954 the club held its first outdoor meet with a walk in the Campsies, and Harrold Thomson was there. Happily for us Harrold is still very much with us and has volunteered to lead a party on the original route, or as close to it as the present day terrain allows. The route starts in the village of Blanefield, where parking can be a problem. However the proprietor of the Kirk House Inn Hotel has kindly agreed to the use of their car park. Naturally we will be meeting in their pub for drinks afterwards.

For anyone wishing to re- enact the original walk in an authentic fashion, a bus leaves Buchanan St. station at 0915hrs and returns two hourly from Blanefield, the last bus leaving at 2130. Fifties clothing optional.

Meet time 10.00am (i.e. not the usual 9.30 am)

Thursday 25th November Country Dancing.

FREE dancing lessons. This is for all those who find it difficult to remember the complicated routines of country dancing. Harrold has gallantly agreed to test his patience and get us all up to speed before the ceilidh. No tickets required but come early to ensure a place.

Friday 26th- Sunday28th.November: Tulloch Station Lodge. OS41 GR 355 802

A block booking has been made of all 24 places in this independent licensed hostel. It is situated at the eastern end of Glen Spean, off the A86 nine miles from Spean Bridge. Accommodation is in four rooms; two rooms each sleeping 8, one 6 and one 2. Rooms will be allocated as fairly as possible. Bed linen is provided and the cost is £12 per person per night. Although this is a self catering hostel meals can be provided if booked in advance. Kate will arrange a booking for a group meal on the Saturday night so please let me know if you would like this when you send your cheque. Also advise if you require vegetarian or have any other special dietary needs. A bar is provided so no need to bring your own.

To book please send a cheque for £24 to Kate Stewart, made out to Glasgow Glenmore Club. This is a popular area surrounded by Munros so please book early.

50th. Anniversary Book

The anniversary book – ‘How You’ve Changed – 50 Years of the Glasgow Glenmore Club’ – is now going through its final checks before dispatch to the printer and so it should be available in good time before the Loch Lomond anniversary meet .The price will be £10 and if you haven’t already done so, please tell Caroline Thompson if you intend to buy a copy/copies – Tel.0141-931 5368 or carolinemt2001@yahoo.co.uk.

Also, please remember to mention the book to any former members that you know of – or indeed anyone else who may be interested. Members will be notified when the book is available for purchase.

Ernie Shedden

Many Club members will have heard the very sad news of the recent death of Ernie Shedden, who was one of the few remaining founder members of the Club. Ernie was very active in the Club in the 50’s and 60’s, and was Vice Chairman from 1961-64 and Chairman from 1964-67.

He was born and brought up in Jordanhill. Like so many of his generation, but perhaps earlier than most, he was caught up in World War 2. He served in various regiments as a PT Instructor and Despatch Rider, and then volunteered for the Parachute Regiment. His Battalion dropped at Pegasus Bridge on D-Day where 75 survived out of 700 men.

He was in action again in Belgium at the Battle of the Bulge, sleeping in tents in deep snow, and then dropped over the Rhine, progressing 400 miles to the Baltic. Later he was sent to the Far East. All in all he was on war service for over 6 years.

After the war he became a PE teacher, was captain of Broomhill Boys Brigade, a member of the Scottish Country Dance Team, and enjoyed holidays at Glenmore Lodge - skiing & climbing. It was at the formation of the Glasgow Glenmore Club in 1954 that he met Rose. They married in 1963 and enjoyed a happy family life raising three children (Carole, Valerie & Graham) and now have grandchildren living in both Milngavie & Australia.

Ernie retired in 1980 after teaching PE for 33 years, and continued to live an active life. This included walking, bowls, badminton and he took up curling at the age of 70. Even though his health had declined over the past 6 years, he was still game enough to take up wheelchair curling this year at the ripe old age of 84!

The Library

Within the Club library there is an assortment of instructional books covering rock-climbing, snow and ice techniques, mountain first aid, navigation, mountain safety and weather.  Among the various guide books available are SMC guides and climbing guides to various areas.  There are also a number of books written by well-known climbers - some describing specific expeditions.

After some discussion at the AGM, it was decided to give the library another year's grace before making a decision on whether to abandon it completely.  Connie Thomson agreed to take on the library but first of all she would like you to look through the list below to see if you are in possession of any of the books which are missing from the library.  Please own up if you are - there will be no fines! You never know - there may be valuable prizes!

A few books will be brought along to the Club to borrow on Thursday evenings and hopefully a full list of books available will be sent out later in the year.  Further information on any library book can be obtained by 'phoning Connie on 632 5317 (or e-mail connie@t-t-1.freeserve.co.uk).

Mountain Bothies Association (MBA) - Summer Newsletter

Following the report of a hill walker’s death by lightning on Beinn Os in May, the Editorial in this edition of the MBA newsletter gave a reminder NOT to shelter near crags, trees or caves, but rather to huddle on the open hillside until the storm has passed, temporarily ditching any large metal objects.  With much recent pyrotechnic activity, this reminder is timely.

Over summer 2004 and 2005, much work involving heavy vehicles will be in progress on the Gleann Einich track to improve the water supply for parts of Speyside and diversions from the normal footpath will be necessary.

MBA are looking for a minute secretary for 4 weekends a year - any volunteers?

Those of you who read the GGC newsletter in February may recall references to Glen Pean Bothy near Loch Arkaig.  An article by Irvine Butterfield in the MBA newsletter relates what life was like for the Campbell’s who brought up three sons and two daughters there - including a journey on foot and by boat to Tarbet on Loch Nevis to have one of their daughters christened.

As usual, this MBA newsletter updated news of bothies in all areas as well as the above - and other articles and information.  It is available from Connie Thomson, the current librarian.
