Circulating the Newsletter

As this is the first newsletter of this session it has been sent out to everyone hard copy. About 1/3 of club members now have email. In future newsletters will be sent to email addresses where we have them, if you would rather collect yours in person at indoor meets or receive it in the post, please let Dave Watson know

Booking Outdoor Meets

Our outdoor meets continue to be popular and for some of this years meets there will be limited space. Bookings will continue to ‘open’ at the relevant indoor meet, when the meet co-ordinator puts out the booking sheet. This is usually the evening when the newsletter containing the detail of the meet is circulated. Some people may receive newsletters by email in advance of this date, but bookings can not be accepted in advance. Bookings should be made in person or by phone, not by email. Occasionally special-booking procedures may be necessary, please check in the relevant newsletter.

Route Cards

At the last AGM (May 2001) the committee undertook to review the current route card. Discussion at the AGM suggested two distinct views; one that the current card should not be changed; the other wanting less prescriptive information, but retaining mandatory requirements.

At the Inverey meet in the summer 3 other issues arose; (a) the filling out of cards on the last day of a meet; (b) the filling out of route cards by members in satellite accommodation (other than where the meet co-ordinator is staying) and (c) contacting the co-ordinator to let him/her know of you are safely off the hill.

After a lot of discussion and email correspondence the committee have decided the following

Minor changes will be made to the route card. The essential pieces of information are: ‘Named people’: ‘Expected return time’: ‘Car Identification’ and ‘Intended route’. The time/distance calculation has been left on to assist you in making the calculation to give your 'Expected Return Time’, you don’t have to show the workings if you don’t want to. The Equipment Carried has also been left on as the consensus was this was a useful checklist

The committee recommends

Route cards are completed by all parties including individuals going out onto the hills. If you wish to fill in a card for a low level walk, this is fine.

Route cards are completed for all days of the meet (when you are going onto the hills) including the last day, when you will also be travelling home.

Route cards are completed by all those associated with the meet, this means club members staying in satellite accommodation (not in the same place as the meet co-ordinator) or camping. The meet co-ordinator will undertake to get route cards to people in alternative accommodation

Someone in the party let the co-ordinator know of you safe return. In practise this has been done by phone, either on the way home or when you get home.

These measures are in place for the safety of everyone, if you don’t return the co-ordinator has to be able to give sufficient information to the police to allow them to organise a meaningful search for you.

Our Very Own Website

Some great news and many thanks to John McPartlin for putting in the hard work and making it happen.

"Glenmore Club Website" is now up and running with the address

http://www.glasgowglenmore.org.uk

It has been published now to allow the inclusion of the new programme and make the link with the MCofS, however there is still some development work to be done so please watch this space. In particular John has included a page (with provision for supplementary pages) for photo galleries. There is nothing there yet and John is looking for contributions, either by hard copy or email.

Suggestions; comments or photos to John (tel 0141 578 9986)

email johnmcpartlin@ntlworld.com

Hillhead Library

There has been much discussion recently about the Library in view of the increase in charges from £40 to £65 per let. We have had to change from the large hall to the small hall (@£55) per let. We will review the effect of this on the subscription at next years AGM. The first indoor meet will still be in the large hall, all the rest will be in the small hall.

Club Programme

A copy of the draft programme is attached, please remember this is a draft and may be subject to change, depending on availability of speakers/hostels. Final details will be in the newsletters.

Start time for day meets is 09.30 (unless stated otherwise)

Evening meets start at 07.30 for 08.00 (tea and biscuits at 07.30). If you are interested in joining other club members for the meal beforehand, please contact the relevant co-ordinator who will give you details

Weekend 24-26 August Glen Spean – Inveroy OS 41

We are camping at Inveroy; half way between Roy Bridge and Spean Bridge. The campsite is on the road about 1km west of Roybridge (GR OS 41 258811). It is not the Bunroy site in Roybridge !! Lots of Grey Corries on the doorstep. I’ve not booked the site but please let me know if you are going so transport can be arranged.

Sunday 9 September Rockclimbing on Ben A’an (Trossachs) OS 57

Meet at the car park on the A821 (GR 509070) at 09.30. Let me know if you are going. Please try and bring/beg/borrow/steal some gear (and midge repellent). I will bring the club gear, but we only have 2 ropes, 2 harnesses and 4 helmets. Walking/cycling options abound if the weather isn’t suitable.

Thursday 13 September John and Gill MacLean – World Tour of Slovenia

What better start could there be to our new programme than our very own ‘MacLeans’? Fresh back from a tour of Slovenia and points east we are guaranteed a ‘roistering’ good night.

Weekend 14 & 15 September Coruisk Hut – Skye – OS 32

First – apologies. We thought we had this JMCS hut booked for the Glasgow September Weekend, but a major c**k-up has occurred (mainly due to the hand-over to their new custodian) and we don’t have the hut for the September weekend but for the weekend starting14 Sept. The good news is that we have it until Thursday 20th, if anyone is interested in an extended weekend or mid-week trip. It is a small hut with 9 beds, so please give me a ring asap if you are interested in going. A deposit of £10 is required. Camping outside is allowed. I will be organising a boat from Elgol for Friday pm – we’ll have to get away from Glasgow by lunch-time.

Weekend 21 to 24 September Aviemore - Loch Morlich OS 36

This was originally to be an alternative to Coruisk for those that couldn’t make Skye. Now it is our September weekend meet. The usual place – Loch Morlich campsite,

Thursday 4 October Altitude Sickness Guest Speaker – Dr Andy Peacock

Dr Andy Peacock will talk on the physiology behind adjusting to the effects of altitude. Andy has done extensive research in this area. Among other factors genetics plays a part in the ability of individuals to adjust to altitude. We can look forward to an illuminating and aerating talk.

Arrochar Mountain Rescue Team are going to put us through our paces with some intermediate training and fun exercises, all on the hills around Arrochar. Meet (at the now closed) Outdoor centre between Arrochar and Tarbet at 09.30, with compass and suitable map – Landranger or Pathfinder or Harvey’s 1:40,000. Two different maps would be useful for comparison. As the team are a deserving charity and planning a new purpose built centre we are asking for a donation of £18 per person.

Thursday 18 October Elvire & Bill The Grand Tour

Our very own Elvire and Bill, the usual 07.30 for 08.00 start for what will undoubtedly be a most entertaining and fascinating talk with slides for the intrepid duo of their recent world trek. Not to be missed.

Weekend 26-28 October Loch Lochy YH OS 34 GR 293972

This large hostel is (likely to be) all ours just before it closes for the winter. For those of you who have visited here before they now boast a real drying room, which dries gear properly. Sron a Choire Gairbh and it’s neighbours Beinn Tee (if you bring your clubs), as well as some great cycling on the Great Glen Cycle route down the loch. Cost is £9 per night. We’ve 30 places, so please book through me in the first instance, by cheque for £18 to cover the whole weekend.

November Co-ordinator Gordon Dykes

Tel 0141 357 3936 email gordonjohndykes@netscapeonline.co.uk

Sunday 11 November Lochearnhead OS 51 GR 593238

Its time to get out your faithful sheet 51 and to savour the veritable cornucopia of delights this area offers. Pandora herself would have opened this box of goodies. What can I say to tempt you that hasn’t been said in a thousand previous newsletters.

There could even be some early snow.

The meeting place is as always the public car park close to the water sports centre on the North loch side. Usual time 09.30.

Weekend 23 to 25 November Kinguisse OS 35 GR 759008

Staying at Laird’s Bothy, 68 High Street, Kinguisse You’ll certainly want O.S. sheet 36 and I may toss in 42 and 43. Just to be racy.

Placed between Newtonmore and Aviemore. This can be viewed as an analogy of Dante’s Devine Comedy. You are Dante and the club is your guide, Virgil. You will be taken on a journey through the Inferno (Aviemore) to Purgatory (Kingussie) and eventually to Paradise (Newtonmore). You will have to nominate who will be your Beatrice.

We have an exclusive booking for this hostel with modern and well-maintained facilities. It’s one of my personal favourites; I’m known to use it between GGC meets. It has a bar and restaurant on site although you are very welcome to self-cater. There is one private cottage available of a first bribe Gordon first serve. Well at least this bribe is open to all comers.

I refuse to discuss the hills here. If you don’t know them what are you doing in the club? We are a hill-walking club, so I can at least expect you to have picked up some knowledge. Hills are either the big pointy or occasionally big round things. This area does have some super big round ones. If this makes no sense I’ll get you a book to read. Ladybird does a good one. Taught Dave Watson and Malcolm Kennedy all they know about navigation.

We can leave gear in the Laird’s Bothy on Sunday and return to shower etc at the days end. I expect they intend to sell a few drinks and meals at this time and it is super PR to encourage us back. So why not?

Thursday 15 November Queen Victoria’s Journey’s in Scotland

Guest Speaker - Bill Taylor Secretary of the Royal Geographical Society (Glasgow Centre)

Meal in Anti-Pasti at 6pm before hand

So you thought Vicky only went to Royal Dee Side? Well think again. The lady got about a bit, as you will find out during this fascinating talk with some super snaps of the Scottish landscape. I feel myself coming over ‘all patriotic’ at the thought.

God Bless our gracious Queen,

Long live our noble Queen,……………….

Thursday 29 November Member’s Slides Night

Meal in Ashoka Ashton Lane at 6pm before hand

M. Is your uh, is your wife interested in……. photograph, ay? "Photographs, ay", he asked him knowingly?

S. Photography?

M. Snap snap, grin grin, wink wink, nudge nudge, say no more?

S. Holiday snaps, eh?

M. They could be, they could be taken on holiday. Candid, you know, CANDID photography?

S. No, no I’m afraid we don’t have a camera.

M. Oh. Still………………….

Well this man is of no use tonight. Its time to dig out your favourite slides. Show off your ability with the F. stop. Dazzle us with your long exposure. Amaze me with your wide angle.

There’s no need for the slides to be this years. Interest and beauty are the keys and a good story won’t be turned down. Sepia is especially welcome. I’ve certainly got some ones of Rhona in the bath. Turn up to find wither its this year in France or last millennium in her parent’s sink

Foreign Trips

October 27th-November 3rd 2001

Rock Climbing in Sun Shine in Spain

Gordon Dykes 0141 357 3936

Email gordonjohndykes@netscapeonline.co.uk

The exact venue is still to be decided, but probably Benidorm as last year. The meet was great fun and all who attended were in good heart and mainly good shape after the climbing. Climbers and non-climbers are welcome as equipment; instruction and enthusiasm will be available from some old lags. Opportunities exist to do some other activities, such as walking, drinking, eating and sleeping.

Since we avoid the high costs of the Schools’ October weeks, the price will be very reasonable. If you are interested please contact me as soon as possible so that we can firm up numbers and look for flights

Pyrenees Snowshoe Tour February 2002

Iain Campbell of the Swiss Alpine Club has been in contact regarding a trip his club are organising around the Spanish town of Espot. Many of you will know Espot from the club’s last summer holiday. The dates are Friday 16th to Saturday 23rd February. Cost is not known at this stage.

Daily ascents will vary between 450 and 1000m. No peaks are planned, but some climbs up to high passes will be included. Accommodation mainly in good mountain huts with meals provided. Gordon Dykes has a copy of the proposed itinerary. Details of some of the huts can be found on the following web sites.

www.rotativo.com.amitges/eindex

www.rotativo.com/refugios/

Summer 2002

Where would you like to go for our summer trip in July 2002. The suggestions so far include the Dauphine Alps (Parc National des Ecrins) to the SE of Grenoble in France or Slovenia. There will be a meeting at Brian McDaid’s on 9th October to pool ideas –all welcome.

Mountain Bothies Association Update from their June 2001 Newsletter

By Harrold Thomson

This edition of the MBA newsletter contained the usual notices of work parties at various locations, although many of those planned had to be postponed because of the foot and mouth outbtreak. Other bothy articles included very early days at Ryvoan and Glendhu (nr Kylesku) and an interesting weekend at Bearnais Bothy (nr Achnaschellach). Notice was given of the MBA AGM which will be held at and Haltwhistle. Although a new Director of Projects has been appointed – Roger Hammond – the MBA management have decided in addition to appoint a full time Executive Officer, who will relieve voluntary officers of the bulk of their administrative work. It is hoped that this will make it easier to find people prepared to take on the many voluntary posts.

Scottish Rights of Way Society

Harrold has kindly offered to bring us up to date with news of this society and is preparing a paragraph for the next newsletter. In the meantime you can access their newsletters at

www.scotways.com

Proposed Draft Access Legislation

Many of you will be aware of the draft Code dealing with access to the countryside. The committee responded to the draft consultative document on behalf of the club. Many individual members also wrote with comments and concerns, thank you to everyone who responded. For up to date information on this matter try the MCofS website.
