GLASGOW GLENMORE CLUB –NEWSLETTER AUGUST 2002

Editorial

Welcome to the official start of the club’s 2002 – 2003 season. As you know the costs of hiring Hillhead Library have risen so steeply that the club has been looking for an alternative home for indoor meets. We now have one. See below.

New Venue – Wellington Church Hall

The Wellington Church is the imposing building in University Avenue with Greek pillars at the front. Entrance to the halls is to the side of the church, in Southpark Avenue. The particular room we will be using is called "the library".

There are about 8 parking spaces at the back of the church – off Southpark Avenue and you can also park on University Avenue itself.

We have use of the room from 7.30pm, when a tap-dance class finishes. We also have use of an adjoining galley kitchen.

We will be giving the church £30 per evening for this.

Sun 15th Sept – Kingshouse Hotel Car Park, Glencoe OS 41 GR 259547

The first weekend of the new season sees us among Scotland’s finest hills. The Ling hut is booked and takes 12. It has gas central heating and lighting. Sleeping bags and karrimats are required. There are still some places left. Book with Brian. The full amount of £5.00 per night (3 nights) is to be paid at time of booking.

October Co-ordinator Caroline Thompson 0141 – 931 5368

Thurs Oct 3rd – Gordon Dykes & John McPartlin - Martin Moran's BIG THREE?

Meatloaf sang in the immortal words of Jim Steinman:

"I want you, I need you, but their ain't no way I'm ever going to love you,

but don't feel sad, cause two out of three ain't bad."

Well did Gordon and John feel sad? Did they get 33.3%, 66.6% 100% or a big rosy duck? Turn up! Tune out! Lose your soul in the rock and roll, and drift away!

A working knowledge of 60s, 70s and 80s progressive rock will be of no use tonight, but may be more advantageous in a pub quiz.

(Roughly translated, the above means that Gordon and John will be giving an illustrated talk on their attempt on the Eiger, and other big alpine peaks – Ed)

Sun Oct 13th – Broughton, near Biggar – OS 72

A rare visit to the Borders. Not so many Gaelic terms around here but plenty "Laws", "Knowes", "Riggs" and just "Hills". Meet in Broughton Main Street in layby in front of primary school (and near toilets, I’m told).

Thurs Oct 17th –Indoor meet - no details yet.

Check club website or phone Caroline nearer the time to see what is happening.

Fri Oct 25th – Sun Oct 27th - Bridge of Orchy Ski Lodge OS 50 GR 292389

The club has been here many times before (if you have not, turn left after the Bridge of Orchy Hotel and left again after crossing the bridge, through a gate and along the private road by the river.) The lodge is fully equipped with pots, pans, crockery etc. Accomodation is in small dorms. Bring you own sleeping bag. Book in advance with Caroline.

Costs: Adults £6.00 per night, Schoolchildren £4.00 per night

November Co-ordinator – Dave Watson 07815964752

Thurs Nov 7th – The Mighty Midge 7.30pm for 8pm, Wellington Church Hall

Dr Alison Blackwell will enlighten us as to the habits of our great travelling companion in the field, the midge. She will regale us with tales of her secret weapon the midge magnet, and other ways of making life difficult for this little predator, and how the male of the species is a peace loving nectar drinker- very much like the Glenmoron male.

Sun Nov 10th –Aberfoyle OS 57 GR 521010

Meet at 9.30 in the car park by the river. Ben Lomond from the Loch Ard side, Ben Venue, Ben Ledi and climbing on Ben An all convenient options and then a choice of local hostelries.

Thurs Nov 21st – First Aid

Just before the snow comes to the mountains in earnest (we hope!) this will be a timely reminder of all those skills we all pray we won’t need but are jolly glad of if we do need. Douglas and Joan Philp are coming to disseminate some of their long experiences of hill emergencies.

Fri Nov 29th – Sun Dec 1st – North Yorkshire – OS 90 GR 822673

The club has booked Hornby Laithe Bunkhouse Barn in Stainforth N.Yorkshire which is situated between Settle and Horton in Ribblesdale. This exceedingly comfortable hostel will cost you ₤7.50 per night. The hostel will cook for parties by prior arrangement. The hostel provides only a pillow and a blanket so you would be advised to bring a sleeping bag. As on a previous trip to Yorkshire a potholing trip will be offered to interested parties. Stainforth is ideally situated to enjoy the walking in Littondale and Upper Wharfedale. The hills may not be as high as elsewhere but this is more than compensated for by the limestone scenery. Book in advance with Dave.

Recycling – Good Practice

At the AGM, Alastair Morrison suggested that club members visiting areas where the environment is fragile, should bring home their recyclable rubbish (for recycling in Glasgow rather than overburdening waste disposal in Highland Region). This would apply to bottles in particular. Club members are recommended to adopt this practice.

Mountain Bothies Association Newsletter

Thanks to several recent appeals, the M.B.A. now has a new Treasurer, 2 new people for publicity and probably a new Director of Projects, all keen bothiers and all well qualified for the various posts. An area organiser, however, is still required for the N.W. Highlands & Islands.

From now, any reports on bothy conditions should be sent to the M.B.A. website www.mountainbothies.org.uk instead of to the freepost address formally used.

As well as the usual area bothy reports and several articles about particular bothy renovations, there is an informative article about bothy fires, flues & chimneys – how they operate & how to improve their performance by various lining methods.

A letter from an M.B.A. member recommends that no-one should drink water from burns without first boiling it, for fear of pollution from (particularly) E-coli 0157 or from other micro-organisms. (Make your own mind up about this one!)

A copy of the M.B.A. newsletter is available from the club library.

Any Excuse For A Party!

Harrold completed his last Corbett (see above) in July. There was no party on top (he was on his own) – but to make up for that, he invites us all to a:
