GLASGOW GLENMORE CLUB
Interim Newsletter
October 2003
In this Newsletter………. The Ceilidh
The Annual Ceili/Party is as last year in Tobys Bar on the Jordonhill Hill Campus of Strathclyde University on Friday 12th December.
Tickets are available from me priced £8 and include a finger buffet (a bit more substantial than last year!). The Reel Thing will be playing and the very reasonably priced bar will be open until 12.30pm with dancing continuing to 1.00pm.
PLEASE PLEASE buy a ticket in advance so I can get the catering numbers right this year. Last year I sold 60 tickets but 85 of you turned up!!! Result: not enough food! Kids v welcome.
The Inchnadamph Lodge (Assynt Field Centre) is booked for the nights of 31st and 1st 2nd 3rd of January. Hopefully everyone will arrive on Wednesday in time for the Hogmany celebrations. I’ll organise a communal meal like last year for one of the nights. Check out their website www.inch-lodge.co.uk
I must have a firm indication of numbers by the 1st of December. We have booked 42 beds – and paid for them in full to guarantee exclusive use. If less than 42 go then the club will be out-of-pocket unless we notify them by the 1st. There are 6 double/twin rooms and the rest in the usual dorms which take 30-34 people. The double twins cost more than the dorms! First come first served!.
I would like the full money as soon as possible. £120 per couple in the twin/double rooms, £40 each for a dormitory space. No discounts for less than four nights.
If you want to go earlier then please let me know – and pay me – by the 1st Dec please
A good turnout at Brians last week where three clear options emerged. After a good deal of impassioned debate and ‘voting’ we settled on the Stubai Alps in Austria though the Ecrins in France and the Julian Alps in Slovenia were close behind.
We thought that for the 50th Anniversary trip we should look for a location that that easily accessible by a variety of transport, (including those driving), not too far from home, had a central ‘focus’ town with facilities within walking distance of a decent campsite, had mountains easily accessible from the campsite and had a wide variety of walking, scrambling, rock climbing and ‘easy’ snow/ice. The Stubai fits all this very well.
The campsite in Neustift is one hour bus ride from Innsbuck which is directly accessible from Munich airport by train. The campsite is next to shops bars etc and the valley has good public transport and jeep/taxis. The campsite has lodges for those not wishing the camp. Check out the campsite at www.campingstubai.com . Brian and John Donohoe have checked out all the bars! Huts are excellent and several hut-hut tours are possible. All the main peaks are relatively straightforward; there’s plenty of easy glaciers and the weather is allegedly better than the Swiss/French Alps. They’re also that bit lower – around 3500m. On the downside you have to like men in leather shorts and accordion music – can’t have everything!
I’m trying to gauge the level of interest and will organise a so please contact me to let me know if definitely coming, likely to come, possibly coming or definitely not coming.
If I don’t here from you I will assume you’re not coming.
Dates likely to be 3rd- 18th July
