Day meet to Moffat – Sunday 14th January
2007 Jon Barnes, Steve Rodgers, Anna Strachan, Jimmy
Stevenson and Tim Mason met at the ‘Grey mare’s tail’ waterfall, 16km
north-east of Moffat. After two months of almost solid rain, the falls
were most impressive, but we doubted our ability to cross the burn and
thus reach our objective. So a direct assault on White Coomb (821m) was
agreed on. And bloody steep it was too! But eventually the gradient
eased and we were able to follow the remains of a wall to the summit
plateau. Here the wind was blowing a gale, so we decided to leave the
high ground and and make our way to Loch Skeen, the end of the footpath
that goes past the falls. The burns were not easy to cross, but nobody
fell in, and we arrived back at the cars in good spirits. Against all
the odds, a dry day in a gentler area than we are wont to walk in. JON
