Glen Feshie, Small Hostel Meet, 12th-14th January 2007

Arrived late on Friday at the Glen Feshie Hostel to find it clean and very cosy.
Next morning was not as inviting but everyone ventured out.

A group which started out from the car park near Achlean south of the hostel went along the path to Carn Ban Mor but because of the high winds split before the top, some for an alternative walk through the woods while the rest braved the wind and followed the tops north via Carn Ban Mor, Sgor Gaoith, Sgoran Dubh Mor and Meall Bhuide returning to the hostel through some mature and regenerating native pine forest. From the same starting point two intrepid walkers set out on a long trek south to reach Leathad an Taobhain. Other routes included Sgor Gaoith from Balachroick with ice axe practice on the return, and a walk along forest paths around Loch an Eilein from Lagganlia.

On Sunday the weather was clearer and less windy, even some sunshine was spotted from the hostel window. Walks were taken to Geal Charn Mor near Aviemore and Creag Dhu from Auchmore. A third group went to Cairn na Fhreiceadain. On the way up there was snow underfoot and apart from one snow shower patches of sun gave some good views of the eastern Cairngorms. Four mountain hares were spotted on this grouse moor. Two walkers had been met at the beginning of the walk who turned out to be ex-members of the Glenmore Club so an invitation for tea and scones after the walk was taken up. All walks should finish with tea and scones.
