MUIR COTTAGE AND
INVEREY YOUTH HOSTEL
22nd - 25th September 2006
Due to the numbers expected for this Glasgow holiday weekend meet
both the Youth Hostel and the newly refurbished Muir of Inverey Cottage
were booked.
Eighteen members were accommodated in the luxury of Muir Cottage and
fourteen in the more spartan surroundings of the Youth Hostel. Ingrid as
leader of the month had kindly offered showering facilities for those
hostel dwellers who really felt they needed a good washdown after a
strenuous day on the hills.
Saturday 23rd Lowish cloud and
mist to start clearing to a fine day in the afternoon
with clear skies by sunset.
Brian and Ruth started from Invercauld and climbed Ben a’ Bhuird’s NE
top, then Ben Avon and its SW tops.
David B., Chris E., Dave W. and Isobel cycled to White Bridge,
climbed Beinn Bhrotain then Monadh
Mhor. Their return was round Beinn Bhrotain’s southern flank and over
Carn Cloich-mhuilinn to White Bridge.
David Foster was in ‘Confluencing’ mode and headed for one of those
crosses on the map that everybody else ignores. This one was some 6km
SSE of Ballater and must be one of the very few of these crosses that is
on a prominent feature with a half decent aspect.
For those not in the know ‘Confluences’ are points where whole
degrees of longitude and latitude intersect. There is even a website
devoted to them with some amazingly boring photographs – especially
those taken at sea!
Mary C and Hugh cycled in to Geldie Lodge and climbed Carn an
Fhidhleir followed by An Sgarsoch.
Carn Liath and Culardoch were ascended by Chris H and Monica from
Invercauld.
Stella, Jill MacLean , Alan and Caroline climbed Beinn Bhreac, Beinn
a’ Chaorainn from the Linn of Dee car park returning by the Lairig an Laoigh.
John Donnelly along with Colin and David Farrow had a big day from
Linn of Quoich over the summits of Ben Avon and Beinn a’ Bhuird. John
was heard to complain about the speed of the youngest member of the
party.
The Culshaws (Victoria, John & Elisabeth) and Hilary parked at
Auchallater, walked to the lodge and then climbed Carn an Sagart Mor.
They then made the long traverse to Lochnager’s main summit. Their
return was by the same route.
Bill, Ingrid, Mary H and Jimmy followed the same route as the Culshaw
party.
Connie and Harrold cycled
to Linn of Quoich, up the track on the east side of the river over the
bridges and back down the west side. With time on their hands they
collected a large selection of fungi for inspection and identification
back at Muir Cottage. Some must have been correctly identified as being
edible as they both lived through the night after adding them to their
evening meal.
John and Enid walked from Linn of Quoich to Beinn a’ Bhuird and
returned by its south top.
Ian and Airlie Bryce on a day visit from Aberdeen climbed the
Capercaille route to Carn Liath.
Sunday 24th Rain and
low cloud
Hilary with Elisabeth and John Culshaw climbed Derry
Cairngorm from Derry Lodge.
Dave W and Isobel along with Mary Cunningham cycled to Derry Lodge
and climbed Beinn Bhreac from where Mary made a pre-planned retreat for
an early return home leaving Dave and Isobel to continue to Beinn a’
Chaorainn with the added enjoyment of a wet wayfinding exercise en
route.
Chris E did a low level walk from Linn of Dee to White Bridge,
Corrour Bothy and Derry Lodge where he met up with Ingrid, Bill and Mary
H. They had thought better of climbing Carn a’ Mhaim and were returning
back to Linn of Dee.
Monica, Stella, Alan and Caroline climbed
Carn na Drochaide from the Linn Of
Quoich.
From Glen Ey David F climbed Geal Charn.
Connie, Harrold and Jimmy Stevenson ascended
Carn Na Drochaide from Linn of
Quoich.
In the persistent rain the fleshpots of downtown Braemar proved
irresistible to John, Enid, Brian and Ruth.
Monday 25th
Everybody (apart from Bill and Ingrid who had to lock up the cottage)
headed off home early with no routes being recorded.
