‘Gone to the Dogs’
Thursday 1 December 2005
It was a cold night for Glenmore’s first visit to
Shawfield Stadium. Those brave enough to turn up were:
Gill and Arthur, Henry and Kathleen, Hugh and
Pauline, John D, Ingrid, Bill and myself and brought Alan along to guard
my winnings!
For
those of you who are not familiar with greyhound racing and betting I
was advised that the best chance of winning is to put on a ‘Reverse
Forecast‘ bet which means that you choose two dogs and it doesn’t matter
which one comes first and second. I tried this out on my first bet and
put £2 on. My two dogs came in first and second and I went to collect my
winnings, expecting to at least get my money back. To my surprise I
collected £26! A nice little earner! I didn’t give all my winnings back
to the bookies though, and ended up £30 in profit. Gill on the other
hand had a long wait to find out how much she was going to win with her
£1 stake as there was a ‘photo finish’ with two of the dogs in the race.
After great deliberations with the bookies Gill was finally allowed to
collect her winnings - £1.01p - so she had made a one penny profit! John
D managed to win an undisclosed sum after choosing first, second and
third dogs in a race. Did this have anything to do with John using flash
photography when the dogs came into the arena?
Everyone had a winner that night.
I am sure Henry would recommend the pies at the
cafeteria to anyone who intends to go in the future!
All in all everyone had a really good time.
