Glasgow Glenmore Club

Loch Lomond YH 29th-31st October 2004

50th Anniversary Meet.

This was intended to be the zenith of the anniversary celebrations planned by the club. Loch Lomond Youth Hostel was selected after a discussion by club members over a year previously. It gave the opportunity for people from down south to attend without the exceptionally long drive that would be necessary for venues further north. Additionally it was large enough and grand enough to fulfil our aspirations to make this a grand night to remember. Over 130 Glenmorons past and present attended and some old members were so enthused that they rejoined the club and it’s been good to see them at meets since.

The building is certainly imposing and the wood panelled reception rooms are a glorious reminder of times past. It must have been fabulous to be a rich Victorian land owner, master of all he surveyed. Yes, I am aware it wasn’t all rosy for those below stairs, but I refuse to feel guilt for a past I was not part of.
Although this was a normal weekend with people arriving on the Friday night to walk on the Saturday, most people elected to arrive on Saturday afternoon in time for the reception drinks before the banquet. I had a very pleasant walk up Ben Lomond in pleasant conditions before hand.
As you can see from the photographs included never before have so many ties and skirts been present at a club event. I didn’t realise how well we could scrub up. I dusted off my kilt for the occasion and surprised myself by still fitting the belt with the same hole, I did have to search to find a white shirt .

A excellent banquet was offered and full credit to Grooms, the caterers, for organising and serving the meal and drinks in the location. After dinner and liqueurs the rooms were laid out for the ceilidh. This allowed for more conversation before we had some short speeches from our Chairman, David Webster; honorary member, Harrold Thomson; and founder member Andrew McGinn.
The ceilidh was a lively affair with the Reel Thing making perhaps their last appearance in their current form. Eric Thomson has decided to leave and I’m sure we all wish him well in the future. Space was at a premium and the floor was regularly packed with spinning, twisting and jumping bodies. Occasionally some were even in time to the music. My impression was that everyone enjoyed the night and the cost of £40 each was value for money. Well you’re only 50 once.

Old log books were available for consultation by members old and new. These proved an invaluable source for sorting out arguments, about who did what, where and with whom. Caroline was also on hand to issue copies of the anniversary book to those who had ordered one and to sell copies to those who had forgotten to do so. Sadly one log book is missing. If you know of its whereabouts please let us know. An amnesty is offered for its safe return.

I would like to note that we all missed the Patricks. They had been keen to attend but due to a lack of facilities for wheelchair users they were forced to cancel. I have to confess this is something we overlooked when choosing the venue. I apologise for this oversight and I hope to see them at another event soon.

To conclude it was an excellent night and well worth the wait. Hopefully it won’t be me organising the next one in 10 years.

Sunday

After the SYHA continental breakfast several groups rounded off the festivities with a day on the hills. I have cards for eight but others may have accomplished other feats of daring that I am unaware of, so apologies. The weather was pleasantly mild for the time of year, although cloud obscured the tops of the higher hills.

Jon Barnes, Stella Lowder and Anna Fochi went to Butterbridge to climb Beinn Luibhean. A trip which Jon assures me was excellent.

Denis and Mary have obviously been in training with Lance Armstrong. On their folding micro bikes thay claimed to be going to Oban, perhaps Mull, Iona, Islay, Jura, Ferry to Ullapool, Lairg and then back to Bishopbriggs by car. The bikes were impressive and Dennis was clearly enjoying the wind in his hair. If anyone has seen or heard from him please notify me so I can mark his route card as "returned".

Jimmy & Ruth Stevenson and Hugh & Pauline Bourhill did a round of Glen Fruin, Ballevoulin, Beinn Tharsuin, Beinn Chaorach and Auchengaich Burn.

Chris Huxam, Dave Crowther, Collin & Monica Farrow, Stephen Rodgers, Graham & Rei Quinn, Catriona Morrison, Caroline & Alan Stevens, Shirley Gould and Liz Asher went up mighty Beinn Dubh to Mid Hill. Why is the walking on this hill so good ( i.e. well drained ) compared to almost any other hill I can think off.

John & Enid McPartlin went off to Ben Challum and after this continued up Beinn Dorain and Beinn an Dothaidh on the Monday at Bridge of Orchy after a night in the new Station Bunkhouse.

John reported it as being disappointing compared to others and taking the price into account.

Henry Perfect, Robin Paterson, Dominik Hay of Leys did the Cobbler. I know this sounds like the mugging of a technician engaged in the shoe renovation business but that’s what they did. So speak to them if you want to discuss it further.

Ania Owsianka and Suzanne Ullman also did Mid Hill and Beinn Dubh via Glen Luss.

Dave Broadfoot, Mary Hill, Isabel Freeman and Dave Webster did Ben Vane via Coiregrogain.

Gordon Dykes, Sue Johnstone, Arthur Whittaker, Gill Cook, Fred & Mary Craddock, Garrey Whyte and Rosemary Masterton did Mid Hill and Beinn Dubh also. There was a lack of imagination displayed given the other seven Graham’s in the Luss hills group.

For the benefit of accuracy I have pasted this email from David Foster.

For the benefit of whoever is doing the logbook for last weekend, our party of 13 did the Stoneymullen Road from Balloch roundabout to near Cardross. We had the same dry chilly cloudy day as everyone else I expect, with good views over Loch Lomond at the start, Firth of Clyde at the end, and trees and mud in the middle. The party was myself with Thomsons, McGinns, Andersons, Nobles, Macnabs and Reads. I don't think there was a route card!

Best wishes

David
