First Aid on the Hills

Douglas and Jennifer Philp

Thursday 18 October 2002

Douglas gave us a very interesting talk on first aid. He explained everything in a very simple way which was especially helpful to those who had absolutely no experience of first aid. However, I hope that none of us will ever have to use the knowledge we gained on Thursday.

His daughter Jennifer helped out with some of the demonstrations and club members participated in various procedures such as mouth to mouth resuscitation and external cardiac massage. It should be noted that dummies were used for these demonstrations!

Douglas emphasised that the main thing to remember when it looks as though first aid has to be administered is:

DR. ABC, ie

D = Danger

R = Responsive?

A = Airway

B = Breathing

C = Circulation

Douglas was asked what essential first aid items should be carried on the hill. His answer was DUCK TAPE. This can be used for many situations. Well worth thinking about.

A very useful hand-out was given out at the end of the evening.

Alice gave a vote of thanks.
