BROUGHTON - THE BORDERS - DAY MEET 13TH OCT 2002
After two previous days of pouring rain, 15 people
managed to drag themselves from bed early on a cold, damp and murky
morning to attend this day meet. During the magical journey that
followed, phrases like “Ode to autumn”, “Season of mists” and
Colin Baxter came to mind as the scene changed from dense foggy-grey to
long thick streams of water vapour above iced fields. Soon the sun was
making occasional stabs through the lingering mist, dividing it into
trails and wisps, and eventually lighting the countryside into brilliant
autumnal colours with a backcloth of blue sky. What a beautiful day! As
we started out tiny spicules of ice fell off the trees as the heat from
the sun percolated through the branches.
The routes were chosen:-
A round of Chapelgill Hill and Culter Fell fell to
Garrey, Rosemary, Henry and Brian.
Dollar Law and other tops on a route from Drumelzie
to Stanhope were completed by Dave Reynolds, Jimmy Stevenson, Allison,
Colin, Monica and Malcolm.
Trahenna and Broughton Heights were collected by
Alan, Caroline, (nearly) new member Janet, Harrold and Connie.
We were particularly impressed by the friendliness of
the villagers as we walked through Broughton in the morning and the
local tearoom, which one of them had recommended, looked very inviting
on our return. However, the previously chosen Crown Inn in Biggar
provided a warm gathering place after a very memorable day.
( P.S. Monday --and it’s Raining again. Weren’t we lucky!)
